SMT component sizes and metric – imperial confusion

The picture above show the SMT component sizes.

Normally component sizes were used with imperial units, like 1206, 0805 etc. The problem occur when after 0201 (20 x 10 mils) new component was introduced with 10 x 5 mils the new name 01005 didn’t sound so well. So most SMT machine manufacturers switched to metric system and all parameters in Samsung and Sony machines for instance are in metric units.

My first confusion was when I decided to buy Sony machine in the specs I read: can place components with size from 0603 up to 40×40 mm. I told myself WTF? So expensive machine and works just with 0603 components????

But then the Sony technical support explained to me that 0603 is metric and corresponds to 0201 imperial units. Later when Sony closed their business we were looking aroung for our next machine and reading Samsnug specs:

We already know that 0603 is metric and corresponds to 0201 imperial.

So the bottom line is when you speak for SMT components with size 0402 or 0603 always mention in what units you are talking or confusions could be possible 😉

The same goes for dates, where the Americans think it is such a good idea that the day is between the month and the year, and that is is oh-so-clever to use a dot as decimal comma, and that day and night consist of 2 * 12h instead of 24 hours, and the temperatures are best expressed in a non linear scale, and, and, and …

The life would be much easier if the Americans would step into this century, and accept the International System of Units.

I agree with SI being much better than imperial, but Fahrenheit is linear. It uses another scale, so the conversion to Celsius is non-linear, but the scale itself is linear. Still makes more sense to use melting and boiling point of water than the melting point of an arbitrary solution of water and NaCl and inaccurate body temperature.

And the dot as a decimal separator makes sense. It’s even the official SI one (for thousands separator, the space).

I think you should buy Panasonic NPM SMT because it is better than Samsung. I have known that Samsung uses Fuji and Panasonic SMT Machines in their factories in Vietnam. Samsung don’t use their SMT Machines to make mobiles.

Panasonic and Sony are very good indeed but insanely expensive to support, they are made to run 24/7 and state of art, but if something breaks you are in big trouble 🙂 spare feeders EUR 1500/ea spare camera EUR 7000, Samsung is much better choice in this regard
