Beautiful Boxes made in Olimex

Few weeks ago I blogged about boxes our customers did for OLinuXino.

On Embedded world I saw nice box made from metal which assembly simple with one screw.

I liked it a lot and when got back asked few friends who I know deal with metal processing if this box can be done here.

We do lot of laser cut details and our laser cutter said no problem, we can cut this box and there is place with CNC bending where we can bend and paint the boxes.

Here is the very first result:

on the bottom has option for rubber feets or for stand-offs which can attach to other surface:

you have access to all connectors:

and buttons:

The new version have also openings for the cables from inside.

The boxes can be in any RAL color, we will offer them initially matte black and “computer” ivory.

We are waiting sample painting to proceed with the production.

Box Model-A will be as on the pictures above,  but without the ventilation openings. Box Model-B will be 3.5 mm higher to may fit inside SATA drive and LiPo battery 1400mAh and will have ventilation openings.

Price target is EUR 10 for Model-A and EUR 15 for Model-B (bigger size and cutting the openings increase the time for manufacture and affect the price). For minimal order of 100 pcs the box can be painted in any RAL color and be same price.

Having access to such technology make me feel like baby in candy shop! Same box type for LIME and LIME2 is now drawing and we will have samples next week.

Another metal box / panel LCD 7″ display + LIME/LIME2 inside is on the drawing desk, I will keep you updated. Panels for 4.3″ and 10″ LCDs are to follow.

Building complete Metal industrial LCD panel with -40+85C operating temperature with LAN, USB, CAN, RS232, RS485 is now also possible.

EDIT: While I was blogging new versions of the boxes arrived:

this is Model-B which have increased height and space to assembly SATA drive inside:

in the new version we also add small window or flat cable to go out

and box to still close nicely:

powder painting make the boxes look very professional:

the problem when you have millions of colors to choose from is that you don’t know what to choose 🙂 we will start with simple black cover and grey, dark red and dark blue base as white matte (right side) makes each of your fingerprints to appear on the box when you touch it 🙂

We will have the boxes Model A and Model B on the web for sale next week! The painting is the slowest operation and takes a week.

The availability of Boxes were holding the incorporation of olimex boards for us in many projects. Thanks for the work in that direction.

cool!, and very nice price it seems.
    No sharp edges?

If you can cut and bend, then I would suggest a u-shaped base with a hinge and an LCD screen. Inside the U shape one would fit a CPU board and on top a keybpard (the u shape would fold along the long axis, where the hinges will be). Access for cabling would be along the three open sides and the keyboard could probably be framed in the top layer.

Just a thought, a pebble in a pond, as it were.

If you can paint custom, can you custom laser cut logo? Why booring dots for vent? Give me OLIMEX logo and paint it OLIMEX Red!

Regarding LCD version, I would like to see something like PiPo’s X8 (7″) or X9 (8.9″) devices but with Olimex boards inside and access to cable connectors. See for pictures.

RAL 6018 like certain fruit, for the board named as that fruit. Or 6017 or maybe darker greens, I don’t have a chart at hand, just web search, but you get the idea. Association tricks should help.

Silicon Graphics always had nice colors, check them for inspiration. Also consider using hexagon grid instead of plain square holes.

Now make babyblue, cyan, pink and yellow, purple, lime… I like them and they can be used also as heatsink for 64bit cpu…

I’d like to see the four rear holes to fit a standard vesa pattern instead of arbitrary dimensions, however i’m not sure the smaller vesa 75*75 could fit the shorter box side.
Another possible improbement will be to make the box larger so leaving room to fit periferal circuits or a 2.5″ disk on the same plane insted of hanging it on the cover.

HDD seems to be flipped upside-down while the box is closed, which is not good for it. Or is this removal part the bottom of the box?

So will this be compatible with the LIME?

Why so small ? It has the same problem as with all Raspi cases that you can’t fit anything inside it & hide connectors inside with just the necessary wires coming out.

Lol, Onion, you can just buy PC if you’re ok with HUGE cases. Whole point of these devices they are small and low powered. Nobody is going to compete Full Tower workstations using 2 core ARM anyway.
