We are very proud of our new ESP32-POE-ISO and delighted to announce it’s already in stock ready for order!

What we did with this improved version of the low cost ESP32-POE power over ethernet solution for IoT?

  1. As many requested we add 3000VDC galvanic insulation. Now you can program / debug while connected to PoE switch or router;
  2. Many asked for more GPIOs so we set SD-card in 1 bit mode and this way released 3 GPIO pins for other use;
  3. We got hints that new Espressif SDK allow ultra deep sleep modes for ESP32 and we re-designed the power supply part that now the ESP32-POE-ISO has consumption down to 200 uA (130uA of which are taken from ESP32-WROOM-32D module). The rest board without the module consumes just 70uA;
  4. As per your request now battery level has option to be monitored with the ESP32 ADC;
  5. There is External power detection option, so your software will be aware when run sole on battery and when have plenty of power.
  6. The Isolated DCDC we use is 2W and provides 400mA @5V, 100mA are reserved for the battery charge (available if no battery is connected) and 100mA are provided for ESP32, which leaves up to 200mA @5V for your additional circuit.

ESP32-POE is one of our best selling boards, it’s low cost less than EUR 18 in single quantity and allow you to make IoT sensor network with existing Ethernet POE infrastructure.

The end node can provide up to 4W combined on +5V and +3.3V output to external components and circuits which is more than enough for most applications.

To simplify the design and lower the cost ESP32-POE has no galvanic insulation.

Some customers asked can we add such insulation – sure it’s possible, meet the new ESP32-POE-ISO. So here above on the picture you see first samples of the insulated POE board.

We wanted to keep is as similar to existing POE as possible, as you can see the new board is just 15 mm longer and keep same pinout on the connectors, allowing ESP32-POE to be directly replaced with ESP32-POE-ISO.

What are the benefits? Now you can safely debug your ESP32-POE-ISO while connected both to computer with USB cable and Ethernet POE cable.

For the insulation we use 2W DCDC converter with 3000VAC insulation. The available 400mA are split between ESP32 and external circuit and in most application will be sufficient.

The price of ESP32-POE-ISO is EUR 23.95 (only EUR 6 more than non-isolated ESP32-POE) in single quantity.

If 2W are not enough, we can produce same board with 3W DCDC which allow 600mA current, but the price will rise with another 3 EUR to EUR 26.95 in single quantity.

This board offers Open Source Hardware / FOSS solution and building block for distributed sensor network with power over existing LAN infrastructure.

Possible use cases are Home automation, Industrial machine logging, remote environmental monitoring, access control, remote displays etc.

The board contains ESP32-WROOM-32 module with WiFi/BLE and Ethernet connectivity , RESET and USER buttons, micro SD card, LiPo battery charger and LiPo connector which allow board to work even with power supply drops.

The UEXT connector on the board can be used to connect many different sensors like:

Si3402-B chipset takes care for the power over ethernet, it’s IEEE 802.3 compliant, including pre-standard (legacy).

Important notice, to keep board compact and as it’s main purpose is to connect to cloud different remote sensors there is no galvanic isolation between board and the power delivered by the LAN switch or router.

ESP32-POE has internal programming interface and you can program it with Espressif SDK or Arduino via USB cable. As the board is not galvanic isolated from the Ethernet power supply, before you connect the USB cable to your computer you should remove the Ethernet cable or you should use USB-ISO between your computer the ESP32-POE!
