ESP32-EVB now get much better

ESP32-EVBESP32-EVB revision A was made quick and has too many errors 🙂 some were due to the non very clear documentation, like that we assumed that all ports could have internal pull-ups but  when we try to write the software we found that the GPIOs we used for the buttons has no such. Other were done by our engineer negligence.

We had small 100 pcs series from Revision A, but after all issues we encounter just decided to trash it and just move forward to revision B.

Now in Revision B all interfaces are tested and confirmed to work fine 🙂

What we keep:

  1. Two relays 250VAC/10A
  2. LiPo charger which allow ESP32 to work without external power supply
  3. Reset and User button
  4. micro SD card
  5. UEXT connector to add temperature, humidity, etc sensors
  6. GPIO with all signals available on 0.1″ proto friendly step connector

What we add:

  1. USB connector now is also used for automatic programming of ESP32 so no need for external serial cable, with DTR and RTS bootloader mode is entering automatically
  2. Ethernet now is correctly wired and works 🙂
  3. We were surprised to read ESP32 has CAN and we try and it works great, so in the new revision we add CAN driver
  4. We add Infrared transmitter and receiver, so now you can control all your home appliances with IR control like TVs, VCRs, Air conditioners, and everything else with IR control

What we removed:

  1. second button, with all above peripherals the ESP32-WROOM-32 module resources are gone, there is no single GPIO unused left

Revision B schematic can be reviewed here . The PCB is now routing.

ESP32-WROOM-32 modules are in stock now!

Again these are from the very first lot and with limited supply. To give chances to more developers to try them we will not allow more than 3 modules per order.

This module is good only if you develop your own board. For these who are not good with the soldering iron and SMD components soldering our advice is to wait for new supply of ESP32-CoreBoards or our own ESP32-EVB which will come with two Relays, Two buttons, SD-card connector, Ethernet 100Mbit and all signals on prototyping friendly 0.1″ step connectors.

EDIT: there was question on Twitter if these are original Espressif parts and why there is no FCC/CE markinig, my guess is that the certification is not complete, as it’s in the datasheet but not on module body. The modules come directly from Espressif, as you can see from reel label they are manufactured October 15th 2016 and one week later are in our stock for sale 🙂

The quantity is very limited due to the high demand Espressif still can’t fill all the orders they got, so we will got less than 100 to start with.

Qualcomm with new dual band Low Power WIFI Solution QCA4004

The Low Cost WiFi revolution made by Texas Instruments CC3xxx and Esspressif ESP8266 is not escaped unnoticed by the big boys in the wireless business.

Qualcomm has new product QCA4004 which targets same market but has lot more to offer:

  • Dual-band 2.4 GHz/5 GHz
  • Low energy
  • IPv4/IPv6 Networking
  • SSL Client with AES encryption
  • RTOS and Toolchain for code on chip
  • USB 2.0,  SPI/SDIO, UART, HS-UART, I2C, 2xI2S, GPIOs
  • Commercial: 0 to 85˚ C (case) Industrial: -40 to 85˚ C (ambient) temperature grades

So far the official quotes for the chip through the official distributors are high, but we know Qualcomm is leader in the wireless solutions and can manufacture efficiently, so once these get in main stream production the prices may drop below ESP8266 prices 🙂

We now have in stock ESP8266-EVB.

It’s small 57 x 50 mm development board with MOD-WIFI-ESP8266-DEV board on socket, Relay 250VAC / 10A, button, UEXT connector, 0.1″ step connector with all ESP8266 signals. Power supply 5V jack.

The board price is EUR 9.95/ea

The demo code we work on now will create WIFI AP hot spot where you can connect with any device with WIFI capability, then from the web page you can switch on/off the relay, read the button status and send I2C or SPI commands. Small tutorial how to setup the GCC and SDK also will be blogged this week.

The button is with dual purpose, it’s general purpose button, but if it’s pressed during power up the ESP8266 will go in bootloader mode and you will be able to upload new firmware in the chip.

To upload code you will need any USB to serial 3.3V converter like USB-Serial-Cable-F which directly plugs to UEXT pins.

ESP8266-DEV can be powered with SY0605E.

Recently we blogged about the new ultra low cost UART to WIFI modules based on ESP8266 ICs. Today the WIFI modules and sample chips arrived so we can finally test them.

The low cost $5 modules focused the interest of many people. We already have translated datasheet, forum and some people even started write code for Arduino without having these modules at all 🙂

One problem I see is that there are no official schematic with components with values nor reference design. We are going to change this as we already got 3 different modules and the components around ESP8266 are not so many, so we will capture the schematic and make reference PCB layout in the next few days.

New UART to WIFI chipset will unleash low cost Internet of Things

WiFi infrastructure is everywhere which makes easier to make network of devices connected to WiFi.
There is also great range of WIFI routers with different space coverage and speeds, and as they are mass produced product the prices are at the rock bottom if we have to compare to Zigbee or Bluetooth.
WiFi stack require resources though and not quite good for smallish 8bit populary hobby processors, this is why UART-to-WIFI solutions were made and become popular.
Texas Instruments released CC3000 which cost about $20-25 in single quantities and $10 in volume.
It took no longer and Chinese company Espressif released their ESP8266 highly integrated UART-WIFI bridge IC, it requires just quartz crystal and balun to make WIFI module, their reference design is with just 11 x 12 mm board space!
And of course this comes at Chinese prices: you can buy ESP8266 module in single quantity from Seedstudio for $6.95 or from Alibaba for $5!
On top of this you can easy connect devices to Internet and send and receive data through UART!
This will definitely wipe out the $50-60 Arduino WIFI shields and even Microchip’s MRF24WB0MA etc modules.

We are going definitely to release MOD-ESP8266 which to connect to all our boards with UEXT and give possibility to connect to Internet with simple AT commands!
With MOD-IO2+MOD-ESP8266 for instance anyone could make WIFI enabled relay and Inputs and monitor through web page the inputs and drive relays for extremly low cost!

We got heap of good tips and suggestions about RT5350F some posted on the blog more by e-mails. Thanks guys!

What we also saw is that all these devices on the market are just PCBs and missing something important to complete project – plastic enclosure.

So as next step after finishing RT5350F-OLinuXino prototypes and test them will be to try to fit it inside the DB25 plastic shell like PIC-MICRO-WEB:

With just one Ethernet connector and GPIOs and power supply on the 25 pin connector.

And another version with WIFI with external SMA connector on the place of the Ethernet connector, so antenna like this one could be connected:

This way RT5350F-OLinuXino will become much more useful and easy to PLUG-AND-PLAY with simple DB25 connector to other boards

On the DB25 connector there will be UARTs, I2C, I2S, SPI, GPIOs. If we find space we may add I2C ADC as well.

Still is not clear if this will be good solution as we may not have enough space or the RT5350 may not cool well inside plastic box, we will see after we complete first prototypes.
